NOTA BIOGRÁFICA SOBRE MONTE ADKISON

Monte Adkison, conocida como "The Blues Stalker", es una enamorada del blues desde hace más de cuatro décadas. Como muchos otros jóvenes que crecieron en el sur de los Estados Unidos a principios de los sesenta, fue una asidua oyente del prestigioso disc jockey "John R" en la WLAC radio de Nashville, Tennessee, quien diariamente dirigía y presentaba, a partir de medianoche, un popular show dedicado al blues. Fue por ser profesora de ciencias sociales desde hace treinta años en un instituto de enseñanza secundaria de Florida, como Monte consiguió en 1995 una beca del Consejo de Humanidades para realizar diferentes estudios sobre el blues en la Universidad de Tampa, donde tuvo la oportunidad de conocer al hoy ya fallecido Rock Bottom, gran estudioso de la armónica que vivía en el área de la bahia de Tampa, y a la también fallecida "Diamond Teeth" Mary McClain. Sorprendida por el hecho de que en ninguna publicación estadounidense se hubiese mencionado nada sobre "Diamond Teeth" Mary y sin embargo sí se hubieran publicado informaciones sobre Mary en revistas europeas, se prometió a sí misma que eso no volvería a ocurrir.
Durante un peregrinaje veraniego al Delta para estudiar en la Universidad de Mississippi en Oxford, Monte dedicó parte de su tiempo a la búsqueda de información sobre Mary en los Archivos de Blues de la Universidad. Allí conoció a David Nelson, que en aquella época era uno de los editores de la revista Living Blues, que por entonces se publicaba en el campus de Ole Miss. Al preguntarle sobre Mary, David le comentó que él la había visto tocar en la ceremonia de los Premios W.C. Handy celebrada en Memphis en el 92. Entonces Monte le preguntó que si realmente la revista se dedicaba al "blues viviente", si estaria interesado en publicar un artículo sobre el concierto de Mary para celebrar su 95 cumpleaños. La respuesta fue afirmativa y el artículo se publicó en Living Blues, así como también otro artículo aparecido en el número 97 de la revista, sobre el programa "Blues en los colegios" que Monte llevaba a cabo. Monte empezó también a colaborar regularmente en la revista editada por la Suncoast Blues Society, Twelve Bar Rag, con el seudónimo de "Blues Stalker". Después de cinco años, Monte sigue colaborando con esta revista, realizando artículos sobre excelentes bluesmen que desgraciadamente no han gozado de la popularidad que merecían por su calidad entre el público aficionado y los medios especializados. También se dedica a cubrir otros aspectos relacionados con el blues. Su compromiso por mantener el blues vivo se hace evidente en todos sus artículos, fotografías y, como no, en su clase en la escuela de Ocala, Florida, donde todas las paredes están materialmente cubiertas con instantáneas, fotos y posters firmados por muchos de los músicos de blues que ha conocido. Tal como ella dice: "Es mi más respetuosa forma de entrar silenciosamente y sentir mio todo este patrimonio musical –cuando te sientes deprimida y cansada de dar clase y miras a las paredes y ves a Kenny Neal, o a Eddy Kirkland, o a Sista Monica- quizás algún dia podrás verlos en directo y también te sentirás atrapado por su música tal como me ha sucedido a mi. Esta es también otra humilde manera de mantener vivo el blues".

MONTE ADKISON’S BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Monte Adkison, aka "the Blues Stalker," has been listening to the blues for over four decades. Along with many other teenagers who grew up in the southern United States in the early 60’s, she listened to powerful Nashville, Tennessee WLAC radio deejay "John R’s" popular blues radio show after midnight every night. Currently a high school social science teacher in Florida for over thirty years, Monte was the recipient of a scholarship in 1995 from the Florida Humanities Council to study blues music at the University of Tampa where she met the late Tampa Bay harmonica, Rock Bottom, and the late "Diamond Teeth" Mary McClain. Amazed that "Diamond Teeth" Mary had been written up in European blues magazines but not in American, she vowed to change that.
Taking a summer pilgrimage to the Delta to study at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, she spent time researching Mary in the Blues Archives and met David Nelson, then editor of Living Blues which is based there on the Ole Miss campus. She asked David if he knew Mary and he said he had seen her perform at the W.C. Handy Awards in Memphis in ’92. When asked if indeed his magazine was true "Living Blues", if she wrote about Mary performing on her 95th birthday, would he publish it? The answer was yes and Living Blues did and then went on to write an article on Monte’s Blues in the Schools program in a ’97 issue. Monte began writing a regular column for the Suncoast Blues Society newsletter, the Twelve Bar Rag under the moniker "the Blues Stalker." Five years later, the "Blues Stalker" is still writing about talented blues artists who are under appreciated and often ignored by the mainstream press. She also covers other aspects of the blues music industry besides the musicians themselves. Her photographs can be viewed on the Suncoast Blues Society web site www.suncoastblues.org as well as photographs of the popular annual Tampa Bay Blues Festival.
Monte’s commitment to keeping the blues alive is evident in her article, her photography, and in her classroom in Ocala, Florida where every inch of her walls are covered with snapshots and autographed posters of blues musicians that she has met. As she puts it, "It’s my way of sneaking the heritage in----when you’re bored with the lessons and look up on the walls and see a Kenny Neal, or Eddie Kirkland, or Sista Monica—you might just give a listen later in live and fall in love with the music just like I have. Quizás este ha sido para mí uno de los artículos "más difíciles de plasmar en letra escrita", porque cada vez que escucho una canción de Alexis, me siento completamente hipnotizada y como transportada a otra galaxia, por su enorme y expresiva voz y, cuando suena un tema más bailable como por ejemplo "Slam Me Baby", no puedo sentarme ni escribir una sola línea. Alexis P. Suter es una gran estrella, incluso cuando canta ella sola a capella. Pero cuando toca con una de las bandas más poderosas y de más talento de la costa este, o bien cuando trabaja con otros grandes artistas en el estudio de Levon Helm en la campiña de Woodstock, Nueva York, siempre organiza una auténtica revolución y el público se viene abajo en todas partes donde actúa.

Vicky Bell, es la voz que hace los coros de la banda. También es cofundadora de la compañía Hipbone Records, para la que Alexis grabó su primer disco y ahora también su último trabajo. Ella nos cuenta cómo se formó la banda. "Jimmy Bennett y el batería Ray Grappone (tambien cofundador de Hipbone Records), ya se conocían desde sus épocas de estudiantes en Brooklyn, Nueva York, donde habían empezado a ensayar y también a tocar con el hermano de Jimmy, Peter (bajista). De hecho Alexis fue la primera artista que grabó para nuestro sello, Hipbone Records. Básicamente, con Alexis nos dedicábamos a interpretar un repertorio de música animada y bailable, que funcionaba muy bien, pero a medida que ibamos creciendo y ganando más experiencia, nos dimos cuenta de que debíamos intentar ampliar nuestros conocimientos y conseguir nuevas metas. Fuimos realmente afortunados de tener a tantos músicos de gran talento en nuestro sello, como Alexis, Jimmy, Peter o Ray y fuimos capaces de unir y combinar todos sus conocimientos. Fue lo que ocurrió cuando fundamos la Alexis P. Suter Band. En 1999 conocimos a Levon Helm y Rick Danko en un evento privado donde nos habían contratado para actuar. Simpatizamos enseguida y realizamos algunas actuaciones con Levon en el área de Nueva York. En 2004, tocamos con Levon y su hija Amy en Brooklyn, N.Y. Fue allí donde Helm oyó cantar por primera vez a Alexis y enseguida nos invitó a tocar en uno de sus primeros Midnight Rambles, grabado en el estudio de su casa en Woodstock. "Live At The Midnight Ramble" de la Alexis P. Suter Band, es una combinación de música con raíces, soul, blues y rock y muestra todo el talento de Alexis P. Suter, Ray Grappone, Vicki Bell, Glenn Turner, Jimmy y Peter Bennett, Linda Pino y toda la banda de Levon Helm. “The Midnight Rambles” son una serie de actuaciones en directo abiertas al público, donde se crea una atmósfera increíble y a las que  siempre es un gustazo enorme poder asistir. Después de mi reciente jubilación  como profesora de bachillerato para adultos y después de haber ejercido durante 39 años, estas sesiones ocupan el primer lugar en mi “lista de tareas”.

Alexis nació en Brooklyn, Nueva York, donde creció rodeada de profundas raíces musicales. Su madre era una experta profesora de música y canto que había trabajado con artistas tan conocidos como Mahalia Jackson, Harry Belefonte, Sister Rosetta Tharpe o el Hall Johnson Choir. Alexis empezó a cantar casi cuando era una niña y muy pronto desarrolló una gran pasión por compartir y comunicar a la gente todo su talento en el escenario. A principios de los 90 se convirtió en un icono de la música más underground y de garaje, siendo la primera mujer afroamericana en firmar un contrato con la Sony-Epic de Japón. También grabó para la Sony un EP titulado "Drums Of Freedom" que incluía el tema “We Need Each Other” que se convirtió en un hit de las listas de éxitos. Además, Alexis fue voz solista en el New York’s Illumination y en el Total Praise Gospel Choir. La Alexis P. Suter Band ha actuado en muchos festivales y eventos, como el Pocono Blues Fest, el Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, la W.C. Handy Blues BBQ, el Virginia Blues & Jazz Festival, el New York State Blues Festival y, con la banda de Levon Helm, han actuado, con todas las entradas agotadas, en el Beacon Theatre de Nueva York, el Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, el teatro Paramount en Asbury Park de New Jersey y en el Summerstage del Central Park de Nueva York. También tienen un montón de fechas contratadas para este verano por todo Pensilvania y Nueva York.

Extraordinario batería, productor y propietario del sello de música independiente, Ray Grappone es quien pone todo el beat y el groove en la banda. Ray tiene la titulación de Bachillerato Artístico en la especialidad de percusión y también es postgraduado en Educación Musical, título expedido por el Lehman College de Nueva York. Ha intervenido en más de 20 producciones en Broadway y también en muchas otras fuera de los escenarios de Broadway. Ray fue también cofundador de Hipbone Records, sello independiente que inició sus actividades editando en vinilo de 12” soul y música house underground. Con el tiempo Hipbone ha ido añadiendo a su catálogo mucho blues, soul y música más actual. Como músico, ha tocado con Carole King, Levon Helm, Bette Midler, Stephen Stills, Eddie Fisher o Bobby Vinton entre muchos otros músicos y también ha trabajado para sellos tan prestigiosos como Atlantic, Columbia, Sony, y RCA Victor.

Los hermanos Bennett, Jimmy y Peter, completan de forma soberbia la sección rítmica. Jimmy Bennett a la voz, guitarra y guitarra ‘lap steel’, es de sobras conocido entre los miembros de la Suncoast B.S., porque antes de establecerse en Nueva York, solía tocar regularmnete con numerosos artistas de aquella zona. Su primera grabación junto a su hermano, “3 Minutes To Midnight” recoge nueve temas originales escritos por Bennett, de los que uno fue incluido en nuestro álbum recopilatorio “Suncoast Blues Vol. Ii”. El talento de los hermanos Bennett se ha puesto al servicio de artistas tan reputados como Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Hubert Sumlin, Garth Hudson, B.B. King o Elvis Costello. Actualmente podemos disfrutar viéndoles en sus numerosas actuaciones con Alexis P. Suter y su banda.

Vicki Bell, como segunda voz de la banda y cofundadora de Hipbone Records, está en un gran momento de su carrera. Está muy solicitada, tanto como ingeniero de sonido, músico de estudio, productora y compositora. Es miembro del trío Open Door, y algunos de los temas que ha compuesto e interpreta con ellos, han aparecido en películas y programas televisivos. En el campo del gospel, Vicky ha trabajado con Linda Pino, excelente cantante de tesitura soprano, fundadora de la NYC’s Illumination Chorale, y también junto a Glenn Turner, veterano artista de la escena de Broadway, además de haber intervenido en el show de Merv Griffin y en el Tonight Show con Johnny Carson. Ha hecho coros para Levon Helm y, por supuesto, da todo el respaldo expresivo y vocal a la poderosa voz de barítono bajo de Alexis.

Alexis P. Suter y su banda son un increíble grupo de rock-soul y al escucharlos se hace patente que Alexis siente con verdadera pasión todo lo que interpreta en escena, lo que demuestra con creces en cada concierto. "Nuestra música gusta a todos los públicos –viejos, jóvenes, de mediana edad-. Todo lo que tocamos proviene de nuestras experiencias personales. Puedo decir que siempre canto acerca de mis propias vivencias. Nunca pienso en el futuro, pues nadie lo tiene garantizado. Simplemente salgo al escenario y lo doy todo en cada actuación”.

Y es cierto, se deja la piel en cada concierto.

This is perhaps the “most difficult to get down on paper” piece that I’ve ever attempted because, every time that I put on a recording by Alexis, I become mesmerized and am transported to another galaxy by her raw, soulful voice or if it is a sexy, soulful dance number like “Slam Me Baby”, I can’t sit still long enough to write. Alexis P. Suter is a star all by herself—a capella. However, combined with one of the tightest, most talented bands on the east coast and her work with guest artists at Levon Helm’s barn/studio in Woodstock, New York, she brings the house down whenever she performs.

Former Bay-area musician and personal friend, Jimmy Bennett, had been raving to me about Alexis for over a year before I finally got electrified when I first heard her sing.  Why this artist and her band aren’t at the top of the charts or booked solid for top international blues festivals yet just tells me that people haven’t been exposed to their talent yet. If you happen to be one of them, promise me after you read this that you will go to YouTube and watch the videos of the band performing.

Vicki Bell, background vocalist with the band and co-founder of Hipbone Records, which recorded both Alexis’ debut and most recent disc explains how the band got together, “Jimmy Bennett and drummer Ray Grappone (also co-founder of Hipbone Records) met in college in Brooklyn, New York, and have been playing with Jimmy’s brother Peter(bassist) ever since. Alexis was the premier artist on our label, Hipbone Records. We were mainly focusing on groovy dance releases with Alexis, that were going great, but as we all grew, we realized that we should reach out a bit. We were blessed to have all of this amazing talent on our label, Alexis, Jimmy, Peter, and Ray and we were able to fuse them all together. That is when we started the Alexis P. Suter Band. We met Levon Helm and Rick Danko at a private event that we were hired to play at in 1999. We kindled a nice friendship, and began to play some gigs together with Levon in the New York area. In 2004, we played a gig with Levon and his daughter Amy in Brooklyn, N.Y. This is where he heard Alexis sing for the first time, and invited us to play one of the early Midnight Rambles at his home/studio in Woodstock.  We were honored to have played there over 80 times; it is a true musical experience like no other.” Available at www.levonhelm.com

The Alexis P. Suter Band, “Live at the Midnight Ramble”, is a mix of roots, soul, blues and rock and showcases the talent of Alexis P. Suter, Ray Grappone, Vicki Bell, Glenn Turner, Jimmy and Peter Bennett, Vicki Bell, Linda Pino and the Levon Helm Band. The Midnight Rambles are a series of live shows open to the public which must indeed be an amazing lifetime treat to experience.  Having recently retired from 39 years of teaching high school seniors, it is at the top of my own personal ‘bucket list.’

Alexis was born in Brooklyn, New York with deep musical roots. Her mother was an accomplished singer and music teacher who worked with such well-known artists as Mahalia Jackson, Harry Belefonte, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and the Hall Johnson Choir.  Alexis began singing at an early age and developed a passion for sharing her talent on stage. In the early 90’s she became a staple of underground garage music and was the first African-American woman signed to Sony-Epic. (Japan)  For Sony she also recorded an EP titled “Drums of Freedom” including the hit ‘We Need Each Other.’ In addition, Alexis solos with New York’s Illumination and Total Praise Gospel Choir. The APS band has performed at the Pocono Blues Fest, Mississippi Valley Blues Fest, The W.C.Handy Blues BBQ, Virginia Blues and Jazz Fest, New York State Blues Fest, and along with the Levon Helm Band, played sold-out shows at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, The Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, N.J. and Central Parks’ Summerstage. Alexis and the band played on Imus in the Morning and their song “Ride Ride” is featured on a national commercial for www.howstuffworks.com   In February they headlined at B.B.King’s in NYC to a sold-out crowd.  Their latest CD  “Just Another Fool” on Hipbone Records, is doing well on AAA Radio stations nationwide and they have a full summer schedule booked all over PA and NY.

Drummer extraordinaire, producer, and Indie label-owner Ray Grappone sets the groove. Ray has a BA in Percussion Performance and an MA in music education from Lehman College in New York. He has performed in over 20 Broadway productions and many more off-Broadway.  Ray co-founded Hipbone Records, and independent record label that started out releasing soulful, underground house music on 12” Vinyl.  Hipbone has added full length blues, soul, and modern musical recordings to their catalog. As an artist, he has performed with Carole King, Levon Helm, Bette Midler, Stephen Stills, Eddie Fisher, Bobby Vinton and many others as well as worked with such well-known record labels such at Atlantic, Columbia, Sony, and RCA Victor.

The Bennett Brothers, Jimmy and Peter, complete the rhythm groove. Jimmy Bennett on vocals, guitar, and lap steel should be familiar to Suncoast members because he played with numerous artists when he lived in the area before heading back to New York. His debut release with his brother, 3 Minutes to Midnight features nine originals penned by Bennett and one included on our compilation Suncoast Blues Vol.II release. The talented Bennett Brothers have performed with such notables as Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Hubert Sumlin, Garth Hudson, B.B.King, and Elvis Costello and are currently enjoying their gigs with Alexis P.Suter and her band.

Background vocalist and co-founder of Hipbone Records, Vicki Bell, finds herself in demand as an engineer, studio musician, producer as well as writer. A member of the trio Open Door, her music has also appeared in films and television programs.  Vicki joins singer Linda Pino, a gifted soprano and founder of NYC’s Illumination Chorale on the gospel scene and Glenn Turner, veteran of the Broadway stage as well as having appeared on the Merv Griffin Show and the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and as a backing vocalist for Levon Helm providing the soulful, vocal backup for Alexis’ thundering bass-baritone voice.

Alexis P. Suter and her band is a soul-rocking ensemble and it is evident when watching her perform that she is passionate about what she brings to the stage. As she puts it, “Our music has something for everybody -for old, young, middle-aged-. All of our music comes from personal experiences. I am singing about my life. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. You have to get out there and give it all.”

Believe me, this lady does give it all.
