LA HORA DEL BLUES

"Harmonica" Zúmel Blues Band" fue, de la mano de Vicente "Harmonica" Zúmel la banda pionera del blues ortodoxo en nuestro país. Su vastísimo conocimiento de este género en todas sus vertientes, les permitió llegar a especializarse en uno de los estilos más representativos, el 'Blues de Chicago', al cual homenajearon en sus actuaciones de principio a fin.

Esta formación, actuó prácticamente en toda la Península (Andalucía, Aragón, País Valencià, Castilla, Galicia, Baleares, Madrid, Cantabria, Catalunya, etc.), amén de grandes Festivales Internacionales de Jazz y Blues, como el de Barcelona -1985/1987-, Terrassa -1986/87/88/89/90-, Manresa -1986-, Mallorca -1987-, Festival de Blues de Figueres -1986/87/90-, Festival de Blues de Madrid -1991-, Festival de Blues de Cerdanyola -1991-, Festival de Jazz de Sevilla -1993-, Festival de Blues de Cordoba -1994-, "Blues a L'Estiu" en Hospitalet de Llobregat -1991-, donde compartieron cartel con el mítico John Mayall, Festival de Blues de Reus -1991-, Festival de Blues de Roses-1999-... etc.

En 1985, tras ganar un concurso de grupos organizado por Catalunya Radio, grabaron el hoy muy buscado videoclip con el tema 'Fes m'ho nena', y en 1988 editaron su trabajo discográfico "Stratto Blues" (PDI), un excelente álbum que en sólo tres meses agotó su primera edición, algo fuera de lo habitual en una banda de estas características.

Su amplia experiencia les llevó a acompañar a grandes figuras norteamericanas tales como Memphis Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Johnnie Mars (con quien aparecieron en TVE), Louisiana Red (Festival "Blues a l'Estiu" de Hospitalet 1989, Festival de Blues de Guecho 1991, Festival de Blues de Valls 1992), o a compartir cartel con Johnny Copeland, Phillip Walker, Otis Grand & The Dance Kings, Lonnie Brooks, Eddie C. Campbell, James 'Son' Thomas, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Buster Benton, Magic Slim & The Teardrops, Legendary Blues Band... etc. Vicente Zúmel también invitó, o fue invitado a tocar, con Billy Branch, John Primer, Luther Allison, Jimmy Dawkins, Hezekiah Early, Carl Weathersby, Maurice John Vaughn, Dave Specter, Lynwood Slim, Hubert Sumlin... etc.

En 1987 fueron escogidos por la "Blues Foundation" de Memphis (U.S.A.) como una de las mejores bandas de blues blanco no americanas.

En 1990 viajaron a Francia (Normandía) para representar a España en el Festival de Blues Europeo, junto a bandas de Francia, Holanda, Italia, Gran Bretaña, Bélgica, Checoslovaquia y Alemania.

Una particularidad de Vicente Zumel fue el cambiar constantemente de músicos, por lo que a lo largo de los años la Harmónica Zumel Blues Band y otras bandas que hacia y deshacia, se convirtieron en una auténtica 'escuela' de blues. Como bien dice Ricky Gil en su libro "Bola y Cadena" (Editorial Milenio, 2003): "Ante todo Zumel era un catalizador, una persona capaz de reunir a los músicos más disparatados en torno a una misma pasión, el blues".

HARMONICA ZÚMEL BLUES BAND, fue cuna y crisol de otras bandas paralelas también míticas en el panorama del blues barcelonés, todas ellas lideradas y fundadas por Vicente Zúmel (la precursora Ancora Blues Band (1971), Harmonica Zúmel & His Blues Boys, Little Red Blues Explosion, Worried Life Blues Band, Drivin' Chicago Blues, Blues Explosion, Blues Beer and Wine, Chicago Blues Tributo...). Todas estas formaciónes estuvieron compuestas por músicos de renombrado prestigio en el ámbito del blues barcelonés, en ellas se formaron nombres como August Tharrats, Montse Pratdesaba (a la cual bautizó con el sobrenombre de Big Mama), Amadeo Casas o Alex A. También pasaron en innumerables ocasiones, ya fuera como miembros originales del grupo, haciendo sustituciones, o simplemente subiendo al escenario para compartir 'jams', nombres de prestigio (otros no tanto), de la escena musical de Cataluña de los años setenta, ochenta y noventa como Chento G. Briganti, Profesor Merchán, Joan Ventosa, Sweet Little Montse, José Manuel Arcos, Francisco Ramirez, José Antonio Tur, Juanito Linares, Enric 'Nota' Parés, Jordi Ortiz, Xavier 'Bubu' Prats, Joan Rovira, Ricky 'Brighton' Gil, Sergio Giunta, Keko Pujol, Toni Olivé, Julián García, Pere Sabaté, Carles Nadal, Gonçal García, Ricky Sabatés, Moisés Sorolla, Toni 'Nervio Roto', Javi Volumen, Carlos Segarra, Lotti Lewis, Ron Burke, Steve De Swardt, Lluis Coloma, Ito, Julio Lobos, Julian Vaughan, Leo Carreras, Maurici Morera, David Solé, Greg Proulx, Joan Pau Cumellas, Marc Ruiz, Toni Solá, Ricard Gili, Carles Salas. Vicente "Harmonica" Zúmel (voz, armónica. Barcelona 1952), fue uno de los principales introductores del blues en nuestro país. Dedicado a estas labores desde los 18 años, formó su primera banda de blues en 1972 con el nombre de Ancora Blues Band junto al guitarrista Ricky Sabatés. Colaboró a partir de 1980 como crítico y fotógrafo en revistas nacionales e internacionales. En España -Solo Blues, Quartica Jazz, Ruta 66, Rocks Musiczine (todas ellas hoy ya desaparecidas), Living Blues de USA (durante 1983 y 84), Blues Forum de Alemania, Il Blues de Italia, Blues Matters de Inglaterra-, etc... Vicente Zúmel ha entrevistado y tocado con grandes mitos y leyendas del blues y mantiene estrecha relacion y amistad con muchos de ellos (ver fotos en 'Galeria'). Su programa de radio 'La Hora del Blues' sigue vigente y lleva más de veinte años en antena, se emite en el 96.6 de la FM de Barcelona, todos los Viernes de 16:40 a 17:40 y de 20:50 a 21:50 y también en Internet http://www.geocities.com/radiopica/emision.m3u . Vicente Zúmel tambien ha colaborado en la organización de festivales internacionales de blues en Cataluña -Figueres, Valls, Hospitalet..y actualmente colabora como asesor de blues en la organización del Festival de Blues, Gospel y Jazz de Roses (Girona).

Vicente Zúmel preside hoy en dia la Sociedad de Blues de Barcelona, de la cual es también fundador, asociación sin ánimo de lucro que tiene como objetivo principal difundir y promocionar el blues. La SBB edita trimestralmente la única revista dedicada por entero a este género musical. Más información en www.bluesbarcelona.org Entre otras actividades la Sociedad contribuye en la organización del Festival de Blues de Nou Barris de Barcelona y organiza anualmente el Cicle de Blues de L'Hospitalet en otoño, trayendo auténticas figuras y leyendas del blues que todos los aficionados conocen como Louisiana Red, Little Willie Littlefield, Al Copley, Angela Brown, B.B. and The Blues Shacks, Paul Lamb and The King Snakes, Rob Rio, Axel Zwigenberger o Paul Oscher entre otros. Vicente Zúmel también es miembro del staff colaborador de la revista Austriaca Blues Art Studio www.bluesartstudio.at y de la revista digital del Pais Vasco www.distritojazz.com. A continuación se detallan algunas de sus ultimas actuaciones antes del 31 de diciembre de 1999, fecha en la cual Vicente 'Harmónica' Zumel decidio dejar de cantar y tocar la armonica de manera semiprofesional como lo vino haciendo desde 1971, año que subió por primera vez a un escenario con su Ancora Blues Band, en el 'Salon Iris' de Barcelona (hoy ya desaparecido) y como teloneros de Los Canarios. Vicente 'Harmonica' Zumel, más de treinta años con el blues a cuestas o, lo que es lo mismo, una vida dedicada al blues.

Harmonica Zúmel Blues Band became, leaded by Vicente "Harmonica" Zúmel, the pioneering blues band in our country. His huge knowledge of blues in every aspect allowed them to specialize in the most representative blues style, that is, the Chicago blues, which was paid homage in every gig from beginning to end.

The band performed practically around the whole Spain (Andalucia, Aragón, Valencia, Castilla, Baleares Islands, Madrid, Cantabria, Catalonia, etc.) not to mention, the Jazz and Blues International Grand Festivals such as the ones in Barcelona -where they played in 1985/1987-, Terrassa -1986/87/88/89/90-, Manresa -1986-, Mallorca -1987, Figueres Blues Festival -1986/87/90-, Madrid Blues Festival -1991-, Cerdanyola Blues Festival -1991-, Hospitalet Summer Blues Festival -1991- where they shared stage with the father of British blues, John Mayall, Reus Blues Festival -1991-, International Jazz Festival from the Sevilla province -1993-, Roses Blues Festival -1999- and so on.

In 1985, after winning a band's contest organized by Catalunya Radio, recorded a videoclip with the song 'Fes m'ho nena' that today has become a collector's very appreciated piece and, in 1989, they published their first record, the LP "Stratto blues" (PDI), an excellent album whose first edition was sold out in three months, which was something very unusual in Spain for a blues band.

His wide experience let them back on stage greatest bluesmen, such as Memphis Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Johnnie Mars, (with whom they appeared on TV), Louisiana Red (Hospitalet Summer Blues Festival 1989, Guecho Blues Festival 1991 and Valls Blues Festival 1992), or share the stage with Johnny Copeland, Phillip Walker. Otis Grand & The Dance Kings, Lonnie Brooks, Eddie C. Campbell, James 'Son' Thomas, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Buster Benton Band, Magic Slim & The Teardrops, Legendary Blues Band... etc. Vicente Zumel also invited or was invited to play other bluesmen such as Billy Branch, Johm Primer, Luther Allison, Jimy Dawkins, Hezekiah Early, Carl Weathersby, Maurice John Vaughn, Dave Specter, Lynwood Slim, Hubert Sumlin... etc.

In 1987 they were chosen by the Memphis Blues Foundation (USA) as one of the best non-American white blues band.

In 1990, they travelled to France (Normandy) to represent Spain at the European Blues Festival, together with bands from France, The Netherlands, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Germany.

A particular conception of Vicente Zúmel different own bands was to give place on them to many different musicians. This made as a result that The Harmonica Zumel Blues Band gradually became a real 'blues school' for Spanish musicians. As Ricky Gils says in his book "Bola y Cadena" ("Ball and Chain") (Milenio Editions, 2003): "Above all Zumel was a catalytic person, a man who was able to join the most different musicians around the same passion: the blues"

HARMONICA ZÚMEL BLUES BAND was is the outcome from the merger of several mythical blues bands from Barcelona, all them leaded by Vicente Zumel (the forerunner Ancora Blues Band in 1971, Harmonica Zumel & His Blues Boys, Little Red Blues Explosion, Worried Life Blues Band, Drivin' Chicago Blues, Blues Explosion Blues, Beer and Wine, Chicago Blues Tributo...) All those bands had well known musicians on the Barcelona musical background and thanks to those bands, learned and were trained for blues names like August Tharrats, Big Mama, Amadeo Casas or Alex A. Also mention other musicians who along the years collaborated with Zumel's blues projects, as bands original members, or standing in on different gigs, or simply coming and jamming with Zumel's bands during the seventies, eighties and nineties. Some were well known musicians of Barcelona scene and others were not very popular, but let me mention names like Chento G. Vicente "Harmonica" Zúmel (harmonica and vocals) He has become the forerunner on the introduction of blues in Spain. Devoted to this work since he was 18, he founded his first blues band, The Ancora Blues Band, in 1972, together with guitar player Ricky Sabatés. In 1980 he began to collaborate as specialized critic and photographer with local and foreing magazines -the unfortunately today disappeared Sólo Blues, Quartica Jazz, Ruta 66, Rocks Musiczine from Spain, Living Blues from Chicago (1983 and 1984), Blues Forum from Germany, Il Blues from Italy, Blues Matters from United Kingdom...etc.- Vicente Zumel has interviewed and played with great blues names and he still has a close friendly relationship with some of them (see the Pictures Gallery Page). His blues radio show 'La Hora del Blues' has been on air for over 20 years, and it is broadcasted on Barcelona 96.6 FM, every Friday from 16,40 to 17,40 p.m. and from 20,50 to 21,50 p.m. The show can now be hear on Internet live simulcast at http://www.geocities.com/radiopica/emision.m3u . Zúmel has also collaborated in the organisation of international Blues Festivals - Figueres, Hospitalet, Valls- and now he is blues adviser at the Roses Blues Gospel and Jazz Festival (Girona).

Vicente Zumel also belonged to the Center of Black Music Research in Chicago, one of the blues archives all over the world in afro-american culture.

Here are a list of the latest Zumel's gigs performed before December 31st 1999. On that date Vicente Zumel decided to retire himself from the 'live' music where he had been since 1971 when he first was on stage with The Ancora Blues Band at the disappeared 'Salon Iris' in Barcelona as opening band for Los Canarios.
